Milopita translates to apple cake in greek. There are many variations to this cake, but the two main ingredients in any of the recipes are the apples and ground cinnamon.
This cake is perfect when accompanied with a cup of coffee or tea. You can also add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or greek yogurt on the side and make it a perfect dessert for guests.
Preheat the oven to 325 F (165 C).
Butter and flour a 9 inch (23 cm) round cake pan with high sides - you can also use a springform pan.
In a small bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
Zest one lemon and reserve for later.
Juice the same lemon and pour into a medium sized mixing bowl.
Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples, and place all the sliced apples into the same bowl as the freshly squeezed lemon juice.
Toss the apples and lemon juice together thoroughly, as this will prevent the apples from turning brown.
Set the bowl of sliced apples aside.
To a stand mixer, add 1/2 cup of room temperature butter and 1 cup of sugar.
Beat on medium high speed until light in color, approximately 4-5 minutes.
With the mixer on low, add the eggs one at a time and beat for 20 seconds after each addition.
Add the lemon zest and vanilla and mix for another 10 seconds.
With the mixer on low, add half of the flour mixture, then half of the warm milk.
Repeat.
Spread the batter into the buttered and floured cake pan and set aside while you prepare the topping.
If using walnuts, sprinkle them on top of the batter.
Drain any excess lemon juice from the apple slices, leaving the apple slices in the bowl.
In a small microwavable bowl, melt 1/4 cup of butter.
Add brown sugar and cinnamon to the melted butter and stir.
Add the brown sugar mixture to the apple slices and mix together.
Spoon the apple mixture on top of the batter, gently patting into the batter.
Bake for one hour or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Let the cake cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes.
Remove and place onto a serving plate.
Dust with icing sugar.
